Lord of Your Own

At the beginning of April 2024, the Georgian government introduced the Transparency Law in Parliament, which would allow it to suppress civil society organizations. A year earlier, it had already attempted to pass the law commonly referred to as the „Russian Law,“ due to its similarities with legislation in Russia. However, in light of massive public resistance, the draft was withdrawn in 2023.

In 2024, thousands once again took to the streets in protest against the law. However, this time, they did not achieve immediate success, as Parliament passed the law in a third reading. Even President Salome Zourabishvili’s veto was subsequently overridden by the ruling party’s parliamentary majority. Despite anticipating this outcome, most demonstrators maintained an unbroken belief in eventual victory, whether through the elections scheduled for October 26, 2024, or in the aftermath.

Freedom. A future within Western alliances. This was what the demonstrators were fighting for against the backdrop of a government seemingly drifting further toward Russian influence.

I had the opportunity to witness the demonstrations in May 2024, and I was deeply impressed by the conviction, dedication to their country, and belief in a future aligned with Europe and the West. The atmosphere was filled with an upbeat enthusiasm despite the grim backdrop and the often brutal actions of the security forces. And there was an unwavering desire to be seen, we need the world to take notice.

„Tavisupleba,“ the Georgian word for freedom, literally translates to „Lord of your own”.

Look at this country. Look at these people.
